'Between the still-slumbering walls of brick and marble, beneath the ribbon of the sky, more and more brightly gleamed the ribbon of the water.' Gabriele D'Annunzio

In Venice the sun and the water combine to create a restless magic. The surreal nature of this town becharms the visitant. There is a sense that its very existence is somewhere between dream and reality, present and past.

Venice is not an inexpensive city to visit, especially if you want to be within walking distance of the San Marco's Square, - a sunny, shabby square with an aged well at its heart, an old church on one side and tall Venetian windows looking down . We paid 110 and then 170 euro for our nights in Venice. San Marco's Square is where you find the Basilica (of San Marco) and the Doge Palace. If not in this Piazza I could easily loose an afternoon just walking the labyrinth of alleys, occasionally taking time to sit in one of the surrounding cafés to people watch over an espresso.

The Grand Canal, perhaps the most beautiful water thoroughfare in the world, runs from one end of the city to the other, and has views of some of the most aesthetically pleasing architecture in the world – not to mention the beauty of the famous Rialto Bridge.
